Church history
Shadydale Church of God was founded May 1965 by its first Pastor, Dr. Samuel A. N. Greer. The church had its beginning with four families; the Samuel A. N. Greer family, the Fred Hill family, the Arthur Carter family, and the Isom Stewart family. The first worship service took place at 9500 Lanewood Street, home of Fred Hill and family. There were seven adults and seventeen children in attendance.
The second worship service included a new convert, Ruben Medlock, who offered his home for the next three weeks because it had a larger den that could accommodate the growing attendance. As a result, a decision was made to purchase the property at the present location and move into the facility in June 1965. This property had three small homes on it. One home was utilized as the worship center while the other homes were designated as educational buildings.
The present building was built around a converted four-room house. Dr. Greer took approximately four months to complete the present church sanctuary. Shortly thereafter, he began to spend time in the afternoon, after the Sunday worship services, diligently knocking on doors in the community. The church began to grow as a result of his undying efforts alone. Dr. Greer solicited the help of the members to get involved and witnessed throughout the community. The church’s growth increased even more as a result of their actions. The entire worship center, including the fellowship hall, was completed in November 1967.
The church has been instrumental in acquiring visiting college students from Bay Ridge Christian College, Kendleton, Texas. These students came to Shadydale Church of God as interns to learn under the leadership of Dr. Greer. Many of these students have gone on to become successful Church of God Ministers and Pastors of local and out of town congregations.
